Nadia Hamdi was born Aisha Ali Mohamed Mahmoud to a family who had been involved in music and dance in Mohamed Ali Street for generations. She learnt to dance from her grandmother but supplemented this with ballet to learn how to cover a large stage. She began dancing professionally at weddings and moulids as a young girl which lead to her public shaming at school. She was "discovered" in 1972 by Morocco at a wedding in Egypt, but it was not until 1995 that she toured the USA.
