Tahiya was born in rural Egypt as Badawiya abd-el-Karim (alternatively Abla bint Mohamed Karim)*. Her love of dance was violently repressed by her family. She escaped to Cairo, and at 14 started dancing at Badia Masabni's Casino Opera and in numerous films. She learnt Ballet, spoke fluent French and English and was politically active. She gave up dancing after 1952 to concentrate on acting. |
