Denise Enan was born in Egypt and studied classical ballet from the age of four. At thirteen she combined full time study with the National Folkloric Troupe of Egypt (also known as "Firqa Qawmiyya") with her school work. She studied Egyptian folk both in the field and from films taken of actual village performances. Her Orientale teacher was Saneya Shawki of Mohamed Ali Street. Denise advanced rapidly to become the troupe's principal dancer.
In 1975 Denise and her family moved to Canada where she continues to teach.
