Jamila Salimpour
Jamila Salimpour (1960) (1926-
Jamila started teaching dance in Berkley in 1967. When she saw what her students were doing at the Renaissance Faire she decided to form a more disciplined troupe. This was to be called "Bal Anat" (Dance of the Mother Goddess). From her experience in the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus she crafted a variety show - which she herself described as "half real and half hokum". Unfortunately many people saw it as "real belly dancing". And so the beginnings of "Tribal" were born.
Jamila's daughter Suhaila first danced in public at age three. She is now a well known and polished (cabaret styled) dancer.
